Facebook branded pages for business

Yet another thing that I do, is produce/brainstorm/code custom branded Facebook pages for Business Accounts.  The following screen shots were created for a new business outfit of Best Buy which operated under the name Best Buy Connect which I contract as an Interactive Marketing Consultant. Part of my Social Marketing strategy of course involved Facebook, and part of that micro strategy involved the creation of these Facebook sub-pages full of information which matched our print marketing materials. Designed to inform and funnel users to the company website and other social avenues.

Google Fusion Tables

Google Fusion Tables is a online data management application, designed for easy collaboration, data visualization and web publishing. It allows you to upload and merge large datasets and offers simple data queries and filters.  This is very excited, in particular when used in conjunction with the Google Documents sharing features.  For the example I created below gathering butterfly data, multiple scientists out the field could be gathering information, inputting their findings and collaborating on creating the document below which can be used internally, or embedded publicly and updated in real time.

Interactive Marketing Consultant – Best Buy Connect

Time for another long awaited update. I have many projects that are in mid-development, so while things may look idle… I assure you, they are not :)

Taking up most of my time these days is the work I’m doing over at Best Buy, in their new business Connect division. I’m doing the usual juggling that I love in the role of Interactive Marketing Consultant. Generally, I am on hand as a web professional entrepreneur, put in place to do the right things for out online presence across the board of many projects. I manage the development of the website BestBuyConnect.com, with a constant concentration on SEO, usability, architecture, new content… all the things that I usually do for clients one part at a time, I get to do all at once.

A very exciting role for my day job, while still getting a lot done in the evenings which I will divulge when the time is right.

Minnesota Associate of Independent Commercial Producers

Just an update that the new Minnesota Chapter of the AICP has launched and I’ll be continuing to support the website as it grows and changes needs from month to month.

The Association of Independent Commercial Producers is a nation-wide industry organization created by and for Commercial Producers. It’s mission is to act as the industry voice on a variety of matters; from continuing education of it’s members, contract negotiations, developing and maintaining industry standards and acting as a liaison with other television, governmental and advertising organizations.

I’m proud to support this non-profit going forward with an emphasis on opening communication throughout the members.

AICP Happy hour – email campaigns

Here’s something I should have blogged about a long time ago.

I manage the Minnesota Chapter of the AICP (Association of Independent Commercial Producers) email campaigns for their monthly networking happy hour. Three campaigns go out a month, and have been tweaked for optimal delivery and click-through performance.

New Web Development Partnership

I’m excited to announce that I’m working along side SocialNicole moving forward as her Web Developer.  Nicole works with businesses helping them to connect, engage and grow through social media and digital strategy. Continuing her desire to ‘change the world,’ Nicole also serves her nonprofit peers with a one-of-a-kind Twitter chat: Nonprofit Talk. Proving that the world really does become smaller by leveraging a social network that spans four continents and a half dozen time zones.

I’ll be working along side Nicole and her team to provide high end dynamic web sites to support the larger vision she has for her clients.  We are very excited, and you’ll be hearing a lot more about our work together!

WordPress vs. Drupal… Fight!

DrupalHere’s an interesting article about the difference between WordPress and Drupal.  I tend to put my clients into 2 camps, those who WordPress will work best for that just need a blog and access to update content,  and those who need something more complicated, user profiles, advanced permissions, e-commerce, etc. who I recommend we use Drupal.  Wordpress has for sure taken some big leaps into what Drupal provides, and Drupal 7 has come back with major useability fixes to try to lure WordPress developers over the Drupal side.

I thought this article summed things up nicely :)  http://zenofnptech.org/2011/02/wordpress-vs-drupal-fight.html

While I’m a huge fan of Drupal, I’m a bigger fan of using the right tool for the job, and I use WordPress very often.  Mostly in my work with SocialNicole who’s clients lean towards needing what WordPress easily provides.

SEQUEL Software

SEQUEL Software is a Drupal based website for parent company Help/Systems.  I took over the development of this site mid-stream and continued to build it out to include features such as:

  • user profiles
  • upgradeable roles with connected permissions
  • access regulated downloads
  • live chat functionality
  • access for content providers to author pages on their own

I provide ongoing development support for the site as it continues to grow!

Migrating a WordPress site

Here’s a project from a few months back!

A buddy of mine Luke Grohovsky, asked for a little help migrating a WordPress site that he had built from a development server over to production.  Always happy to help, this took me just a few hours of backing up the database and files, pulling them over and reconnecting everything.

Someday WordPress will make this a more seamless effort.  Until then…
